Is university still worth it?

Debt and three years against earnings, access and everything a degree signals that is not a skill.

Half the people I graduated with are doing jobs that never asked for the degree. That's the reality now.

It is worth it for some degrees and a poor deal for others, and the average hides that completely. Medicine, engineering and computer science pay it back comfortably. A long tail of programmes never does. Telling an eighteen-year-old 'university is worth it' without asking which one averages away the entire decision they are trying to make.

The number that settles this is the price, and the price moved. US tuition roughly tripled in real terms over thirty years while the premium it buys shrank. An investment whose cost triples and whose return falls is not the investment your parents made, and defending it with their numbers is the central mistake in this thread.

The part that survives automation is the part universities are for: reading something long, arguing in writing, and being wrong in public without falling apart. Every bootcamp teaches a stack with a four-year half-life, and then the stack moves.

The graduate premium is smaller than it was and still large. Lifetime earnings gaps remain substantial in both the US and Poland, and the unemployment gap widens during downturns - which is the moment it matters. 'Worth it' has to be measured against the actual alternative, and for most people that is not a well-paid trade, it is an entry-level job with no ladder attached.
